2010 Student Writing Contest Winners

Smith Mountain Arts Council (SMAC) announced the winners of the Lake Writers 2010 annual writing contest. The theme this year was an essay on “A Lesson Learned.”

High School Winners

For the first time, all four high school winners were from the same school, Dan River High School. Lake Writers Jim Morrison, president, Becky Mushko, vice president, and Chuck Lumpkin, SMAC represented presented checks and certificates to the winners on May 27th:

  • 1st Place: Taylor Rae Bauguess, “The Meaning of the Word ‘Father’”
  • 2nd Place: Laura Adkins, “Our Lesson Learned”
  • 3rd Place: Channing Gravely, “A Lesson Learned”
  • Honorable Mention: Lynsey Palmer, “Always Look Twice”

Middle School Winners

Winners in the middle school category are:

  • 1st Place: Kabra Taylor, Staunton River Middle School, “The Birth”
  • 2nd Place: Donavan O’Brien, Pittsylvania County, “Watch What You’re Cooking”
  • 3rd Place: Taylor Tester, Staunton River Middle School, “Alaska Adventure:
  • Honorable Mention: Alyssa Parrish, Pittsylvania County, “A Lesson Learned”
