Art Show Judge - Nathan Popp
Nathan Popp is a professional watercolorist and custom art framer based in Southwest Virginia’s New River Valley. A native Texan, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Watercolor from the University of North Texas in 2008 before completing his Master of Fine Arts in Watercolor and Drawing at Radford University in 2014, where he studied under renowned watercolorist Z.L. Feng. Since 2021, Nathan has served as curator of the Andrew W. Ross Student Art Gallery in Radford University’s McConnell Library, collaborating with students, faculty, alumni, and community organizations to curate dynamic visual arts exhibitions.
His work explores nature’s presence and its fundamental cycles of transformation-birth, growth, decay, and renewal. Rather than relying on traditional representation, he uses experimental watercolor techniques and dry media to capture these organic shifts. The process begins with spontaneous abstract marks, allowing the fluid, unpredictable nature of the materials to guide the composition. As these marks evolve into surreal landscapes, they blur the boundary between the physical world and the subconscious, inviting viewers to find harmony within the layers of constant change.
